Capacity Building Youth

Capacity Building Youth’ offers a program in which young people aged 14-17 yrs old are invited to attend weekly Friday meetups at a dedicated and safe space in Murwillumbah between 330pm and 530pm. During these meetups young people will be offered after-school refreshments followed by an engaging capacity building workshop.  They will then be offered an early dinner and time to connect and chat with staff and other participants.

 

Each term will be themed around a particular capacity building skill that supports social connection, community resilience and empowering youth leadership. 

 

During the holidays young people will be invited to a Capacity Building Day Retreat in Cabarita in which they will solidify their skills and deepen the relationships that they have worked on throughout term-time meetups.

Capacity Building are currently applying for community grants in order to fund this program.

Term 1

Building the Body

The focus for this term is building capacity around the physical body.  Young people will explore what it takes to nurture, maintain and strengthen their physical bodies.  This will be done through Personal Training input sessions, Yoga, tips for establishing a healthy diet and lifestyle delivered by both in-house and external facilitators who are experts in their field.  Space will be given for young people to explore and clarify their own individual goals and troubleshoot what gets in their way.​

Term 2

Building the Mind

The focus for this term will be building capacity around mental health.  Young people will explore the impact of stress on the body and mind, with particular space to explore the impact of natural disasters affecting their communities such as the floods of 2022.  Young people will learn skills to nourish their vagus nerve and calm their nervous system. This will be done through psycho-education input sessions as well as immersive trauma informed movement practices like yoga.  Young people will learn and practice the benefits of meditation and mindfulness in ways that are engaging and practical.​

Term 3

Building Me

The focus for this term will be drawing together the strength of body and mind in order to build capacity around a coherent and robust sense of self.  Young people will be introduced to group work sessions aimed at deepening their own confidence and self-motivation.  This will include expressive arts sessions and journaling workshops  led by trained mental health facilitators.  There will be an emphasis on exploring the interface of a confident sense of self in the face of the powerlessness that can be experienced in the wake of natural disasters.  Space will be given for young people to experience an array of creative arts aimed at helping participants to thrive.

Term 4

Building Community

The focus of this term is exploring the self in relation to others.  In this term young people will focus on developing deeper social connections and clarifying their position and purpose in the world.  Particular focus on the impact of natural disasters on the self and community will be discussed as well as understanding the difference between feeling powerful and powerless as an individual in a community. Facilitators will use team building exercises in order to develop both skills that build community cohesion and resilience.  This term young people will receive leadership opportunities and mentoring in order to create a community project of their own design.
